Rating for Tryout Placement / Head Coach picks
A. Tryout process and evaluation Tryouts will generally be held in late March and consist of three hours of ice time (except for instructional mites). Tryout numbers will be issued on the first night of tryouts. Numbers will be issued by division starting with the lowest number as follows; returning division players from the one team, two team, and three team. The next lowest set of numbers will go to players moving up to the division by team, one team, two team, three team, etc. Within each team the numbers will be issued by date of birth, starting with the oldest player. Players new to the association will receive the next available number following those players returning to the division he/she is trying out for. All goalie numbers will be issued by age regardless of the division/team they currently played for. 40 point scoring system for tryouts. 10 points for skating skills, 10 points for puck skills and 20 points for scrimmage play*. Evaluators will turn in their evaluation forms to the age director at the end of each tryout session. The age directors will return the same forms to the evaluators for each subsequent tryout until complete. Evaluators turn in one completed evaluation form to the age director at the conclusion of the tryouts. (*Scrimmage play points from each evaluator will be multiplied by 2.0 for the Peewees and Bantams) - Evaluators – there will be a minimum of 3 evaluators per division and they cannot be from the same current team. Evaluators do not evaluate their own child. Their child’s score will be the average of other evaluator’s scores. Evaluators cannot discuss ratings and must turn in rating sheets to their age director immediately after each tryout. -
Goalies will be selected by the head coach and approved by the age director. An
outside evaluator may be used if deemed necessary by the head coach and or
director.
A
standardized evaluation form will be issued by the coaching coordinator to the
head coaches during the season, to be returned no later than the first Monday of
March. 4 points – skating/skills 4 points – ability to take and follow direction 4 points – game play 3 points - attendance The current coach’s evaluation score will be added to the total score from the tryout evaluation scores for a total overall score. Note – All scoring to be kept strictly confidential and used for the sole purpose of placement of players for the following year. The treasurer will compile the scores with the age directors and the evaluator’s scoring sheet will be destroyed once teams are finalized. C. Placement of players - Approximate number and size of teams in a division will be determined by the board prior to tryouts based on available information. - Placement of players will be determined by the total score from the evaluation process described above (in case of a tie a 2nd year player will get preference) and through head coach’s picks. - The evaluation results will be used first to place the majority of the team. The head coach may* place a maximum of four players on a team as “coach’s picks” from the Squirts, Peewees, Bantams and Girls divisions. There will be a maximum of three “coach’s picks” in the Mite Division. All coach’s picks must be approved by the age director. - There will be no downward movement for players within a division. For clarification this means that a player currently on the “2” team of a 2 team division (lowest team) may be placed on a “3” team (lowest team) of a 3 team division. Also if a player is on the one team and is returning to the same divisions he/she would again be placed on the one team. At all times, the safety and self-esteem of a child will be of primary concern. For two team to three team placement, parents will be contacted prior to teams being announced.
-
If
second year players are needed or requested to fill an upper division they will
be placed on the lowest level team in that division
unless approved by the board
as recommended by the age director. –
Tryouts cannot be missed for Tournaments or
other hockey tryouts (Select /Club, other towns, etc.) E. Player joining WYSA that did not tryout
- The board will
determine if there is room in the division for the player. The player will be
placed at the lowest level team for the first practice and be evaluated. The
player may then be moved to the next higher team to practice and play a maximum
of 3 games. At that point, the new skater or another player may be moved to that
team for the remainder of the season. Upward movement will be limited to the 2
team unless approved by the board as recommended by the age director. -
Teams will be considered filled / frozen after tryouts (unless a division is
directly effected by the “excused” absences) G. Tryout / Registration fee - There is a $200 per player fee. Following tryouts and placement, this fee will be applied to the total tuition cost. The registration fee is non refundable unless approved by the board as recommended by the age director. |
