    How will we do it?
The children will be divided into at least 4 groups during the first 2 – 3 sessions using colored stickers on their helmets. WYSA volunteers and the Tier I instructors will split the groups based on enrollment.

  • "Craters" - 1st time skaters who need a crate to help skate - Green stickers
  • "Skaters" - no crates – Yellow stickers
  • "Beginners" - those developing a skating stride – Blue stickers
  • Advanced beginners – demonstrated basic control – Orange stickers

Multiple learning stations within each group will be used as the overall format to the Clinic. Stations will be adapted for the particular group. Advanced skaters will be challenged while novice skaters will be encouraged to progress from the crate to advanced beginners during the 16 weeks of instruction

Tips / Rules / Comments

  1. Arrive at 11:30 to allow time to get dressed and start on time
  2. 10– 20 minutes on the ice for the first 2 – 3 weeks is a great start for children under 5 years old – it’s the 1st "organized" sport some are involved with. We’ll work together to get up to skating the full 60 minute session
  3. Progress can come slowly or rapidly – encourage progress and be patient
  4. Don’t over / under dress your skater – use layers
  5. Bring extra mittens / gloves
  6. Once a child is off the crate we recommend a hockey helmet with full-face mask.
  7. Only authorized Tier I / WYSA instructors are allowed on the ice.
  8. Please stay in the stands or along the glass – we use the benches for our instructors & children who need a break

Our overall goal is to create an environment that both teaches and is fun – we want the children to come back every week and continue with our program.

What is Cross-Ice?
Cross-Ice Hockey is specifically designed to provide fast results in the most enjoyable environment available. Cross-Ice Hockey is a system whereby skaters play the game along the width of the rink rather than the full length. One game is played in each end (Blue line to end boards) The reduced playing area increases the players' need to move faster and gain better control of the puck, and the players will get more touches of the puck than in a full-ice game.

A few specific positive impacts:

  1. Playing on a smaller rink results in increased puck possession time for each player.
  2. With a 3 on 3 format  - each player’s activity increases allowing individual technical skills develop more quickly.
  3. More frequent line changes in the game means more ice time for each player.
  4. Line changes are made quickly since the players are directly beside the playing surface.
  5. Scoring skills are enhanced since the players have more shooting opportunities and the child sized goal nets force the players to shoot more accurate.
  6. More shooting = more repetition for goalkeepers - reading and reacting to changing game situations becomes more effective.
  7.  The game is full of continuously changing situations
  8. The speed in playing situations increases, which will require and develop quicker mental and physical reactions by players.
  9. At the increased tempo, all the players take part in the game situations which leads to a greater sharing of responsibilities
  10. Hockey sense, or understanding the principles of the game, is being developed faster
  11. There are no unnecessary breaks in the game.

Background:
Wakefield Youth Hockey has committed to this program for the 06-07 season.
WYSA / Tier 1 will make adjustments to the program as the interest & ability levels directs us.
The expectation is to develop a girl’s clinic for a variety of players that have skating ability.  If necessary, WYSA / Tier 1 will recommend some girls attend at our Sunday Learn to Skate clinic.

Below is an excerpt what was presented to the WYSA Board of Director’s in June 2006,
by Jack Foley (WHS Girl’s Head Coach):

SATURDAY MORNING ALL GIRLS HOCKEY CLINIC

Mission Statement:  It would be advantageous and beneficial to the WYSA to establish an all girls hockey clinic within the organization that would be available to girls of all ages and all ability levels.

Purpose:  The purposes for such a program would be to provide an opportunity for young female hockey players learn the game and improve their skills in a girls only program, to provide current and future female hockey players the option to play on single gender teams, and to create a girls hockey program that will develop skilled players by the time they reach the high school level.

Goals: Short term – Establish & operate an all girls hockey clinic that will create a group of interested young female hockey players, who will become active members of Wakefield Youth Hockey.

Long term - Make a commitment to the all girls hockey clinic for a minimum of three (3) years, increase enrollment of female hockey players within Wakefield Youth Hockey through the successful skills clinic, & establish all girls teams at different age levels (including U14, U12 and U10).
