Tips / Rules / Comments
- Arrive at 11:30 to
allow time to get dressed and start on time
- 10– 20 minutes on the
ice for the first 2 – 3 weeks is a great start for children under 5
years old – it’s the 1st "organized" sport some
are involved with. We’ll work together to get up to skating the full
60 minute session
- Progress can come
slowly or rapidly – encourage progress and be patient
- Don’t over / under
dress your skater – use layers
- Bring extra mittens /
gloves
- Once a child is off the
crate we recommend a hockey helmet with full-face mask.
- Only authorized Tier
I / WYSA instructors are allowed on the ice.
- Please stay in the
stands or along the glass – we use the benches for our instructors
& children who need a break
Our overall goal is to
create an environment that both teaches and is fun – we want the
children to come back every week and continue with our program. |

What is Cross-Ice?
Cross-Ice Hockey is specifically designed
to provide fast results in the most enjoyable environment available. Cross-Ice
Hockey is a system whereby skaters play the game along the width of the rink
rather than the full length. One game is played in each end (Blue line to end
boards) The reduced playing area increases the players' need to move faster and
gain better control of the puck, and the players will get more touches of the
puck than in a full-ice game.
A few specific positive impacts:
- Playing on a smaller
rink results in increased puck possession time for each player.
- With a 3 on 3 format -
each player’s activity increases allowing individual technical skills develop
more quickly.
- More frequent line
changes in the game means more ice time for each player.
- Line changes are made
quickly since the players are directly beside the playing surface.
- Scoring skills are
enhanced since the players have more shooting opportunities and the child
sized goal nets force the players to shoot more accurate.
- More shooting = more
repetition for goalkeepers - reading and reacting to changing game situations
becomes more effective.
- The game is full of
continuously changing situations
- The speed in playing
situations increases, which will require and develop quicker mental and
physical reactions by players.
- At the increased tempo,
all the players take part in the game situations which leads to a greater
sharing of responsibilities
- Hockey sense, or
understanding the principles of the game, is being developed faster
- There are no unnecessary
breaks in the game.
