Stoneham Instructional Mite League Information:
-The idea of
the program is to have fun and learn to play hockey.
General Requirements:
- Players should have the following minimum skills:
Pass the USA Hockey Initiation Level Requirements
(Lesson Plan "A") OR
Have the
ability to :
- Skate forward with confidence
- Stop (either using 1 foot, Snowplow, Drag, or 2 foot stops)
- Skate / Move backwards
The Instructional Mites Season will be spent
teaching :
- Improving Skating Skills (Primary focus)
- Teaching Basic Stick Handling (Pushing Puck)
- Teaching Basic Shooting
- Teaching Basic Passing
- Introductions to Positional Play, Penalties, Offsides and Icing
Season Information:
- Practices begin the first Monday after Labor Day.
- Games usually begins 2nd second Sunday in October - Expect 23 - 25
during the Season
- Entire season is setup as 2 minute buzzer hockey. (Each and every
shift is 2 minutes long)
- There can be "bye" weeks based on the number of teams in
the League
- Games are between 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM on Sundays .
Number of 6:00 AM games are determined by number of teams in the league (expect 4-
5)
- Standings are not posted. Wins / Losses are not tracked - at this
level they do not matter
- Players will shake hands after every game
Game information - 3 Ten to Twelve (10 - 12)
minute stop time periods:
- Icing will not be called
- Penalties will not be called. Players will be given an explanation
if they have created/caused a penalty.
- Goalies will play the entire game and will not switch ends. Goalie
equipment will be provided.
- 2 coaches are allowed on the ice / 3 additional coaches are
allowed on the bench - No referees.
- Players can / will remain at the same position for the entire
game. However, every player will have
the opportunity to play all positions during the season
- Ice will be resurfaced every other hour (6:00 AM, 8:00, 10:00)
Equipment Information:
- All players must wear helmets that fully cover their ears
- Wakefield game shirts and sock are provided by the Association
General Information:
- Stoneham Arena is a non smoking facility
Players will move up from the instructional program based on ability
and open slots.
The assigned mite coaches will determine who and when a player is
ready to move up.
Clinic program - Learn to Play Hockey is strongly
recommended (Starts early December)

From the Principles of Safety section
Protective Equipment:
Parents should be advised of the necessity to wear properly fitting and approved
equipment.
= Required for Instructional Mites tryouts
1.) Athletic support
and protective cup
- must completely cover
and protect genitalia
- purchase according to
correct waist size
2.) Garter belt
- must be properly
adjusted to hold up hockey socks
- purchase according to
correct waist size
3.) Shin pads
- must properly fit
shin bone and knee cap
- shin and knee cap
should be made of hard plastic with suspension in shin
and extra padding
in knee.
- space between knee
cap and shin section must be flexible yet well protected
- when knee cap is
properly fitted over knee bottom of pad must reach, yet
not extend beyond the
top of the skate.
4.) Pants
- Pants must protective
front and side of the thigh, tail bone, hip, and kidney area. Unless they
are properly fitted they will not provide this protection.
5.) Girdles (usually part of the pants)
- Designed to fit
snugly to the body
- Padding must protect
all areas noted in the "pants" section
- Girdle should not
shift around when the player walks / skates
- Bottom of girdle legs
should touch top of knee cap when standing straight
6.) Shoulder pads
- Constructed with hard
caps for shoulder tips, plus flexible shock absorbing
material over the upper arms, chest and back.
- Advisable to have
adjustable straps on arms and body to ensure proper fit
7.) Elbow pads
- must cover the
complete elbow joint with good shock absorbing material
- when fastened
properly, should extend from shoulder pads to the gloves,
and not be able to slip
8.) Helmet
- Most important piece of equipment !!! (along with face mask)
- must be HECC approved
- if adjustable, must
fit properly and cover the forehead, temple, and base
of skull
- straps must be
fastened
- available in
different sizes ,and must not move around the head
9.) Face mask
- Must be HECC approved
- Available in clear
plastic or wire cage
- must be securely
fastened to the helmet so that it will not make contact
with the
face
10.) Gloves
- must be well padded
over fingers, thumb, and back of hand, yet
flexible to
allow movement
- should be hard fiber
protection covered with shock absorbing material
over wrist
and forearm
- glove must extend up
arm to elbow pads
- gloves must fit
snugly, yet be large enough so that hand and wrist
movement is
not hindered
11.) Skates - the
2nd most important piece of equipment !!
- must provide
good support and protection in toe, heel, and Achilles
tendon area.
- toe caps must be
constructed of plastic in order to provide long lasting
support
- counter should also
be constructed of plastic in order to provide long
lasting support
Proper fitting skates , tied correctly - tight near toe,
moderate across middle of foot
and tight near the ankle area, will improve skating skills !!!
12.) Stick
- must be proper length
(on skates - top of handle within 1" of chin) and
lie (angle of
stick blade to stick handle). Request help if not sure
of proper stick.
- should be taped on
blade and upper handle
- ensure a proper shaft
size for the player (smaller for younger players)

TO INFORM HIM OF WHAT IS GOING TO TAKE PLACE ON THE SCHEDULED GAME ICE. No
postponement or cancellations will be accepted via e-mail. |

The team requesting the postponement must make arrangements for ice and
officials and make-up the game so that the game sheet can be turned into
the League Commissioner no later than three (3) weeks after the original
scheduled league game. All games cancelled between March 15 and the end of
the season must:

2.) Have make-up game sheets turned into the league by April 1 with the
following
information included on it:
a.) Date, time and location of originally scheduled game,
b.) Name and phone numbers of both teams’ coaches
Any make-up game sheets not submitted by April 1 or without the above
information will not be accepted.
NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE WILL BE MADE. |

Failure to make-up the game will result in a forfeit for the team
requesting the postponement. If the team requesting the postponement has
offered a minimum of two (2) reasonable hours of ice for the purpose of
game make-up which have been declined by the opposing team, contact the
League Commissioner for further action. |

REMEMBER: The team requesting the postponement will be responsible for
the entire payment of League game costs if team officials do not give the
opponent the proper seven (7) day notification. (This means the fee of

should realize that the ice, officials, and timekeeper are available. If
you (coach) invite another team to play a non-league game you are

Club teams must show proof of registration before officials will proceed
with the game. When, for whatever reason, you decide not to use the ice
for a game or practice, it is your responsibility to call the League
Commissioner. REMEMBER: When the above is complied with both teams are
still responsible for their games costs. |

offending team to forfeit the game. If both teams are at fault for the
delay, no contest will be declared. In case of no contest, teams may use
the ice under the supervision of their coaches for the remaining time
allotted for the game only. |

causing an altercation, will not be permitted to return to the bench as a
coach until he has a hearing with the League Commissioner. |

Any parent or spectator found to be a travesty of the game by the on of
off ice league officials will be banned from all league activity for a
period to be determined by the League Commissioner. For failure to adhere
to this rule player(s) connected to the offender could also face
disciplinary action by the league.
In accordance with USA Hockey Rule 410a, the league reserves the right at
its discretion to investigate any incident that occurs in connection with
a Dual State League game, during the course of a game or in its aftermath,
and assess any suspensions and/or banning as the League Commissioner deems
fit. This includes the actions of parents and/or spectators. |

2000 - 2001
Valley League Rules
1.) All teams must be registered with Massachusetts Hockey or USA Hockey (New
England Region). Official Massachusetts Hockey or USA Hockey rosters must be
submitted to the district registrar by the application deadline. Valley League
Rosters must be submitted to the Valley League office prior to October 1st.
Birth certificates of those players on the roster must be made available to the
league officials upon request.
2.) Full season Bantam teams must submit amended full season roster to the
Valley League office prior to January 1st. All players listed on new rosters
must compete in 10 regular season games to be eligible for playoffs. (Waiver of
Rule #2 for those teams which compete in the White division)
3.) The playing rules of the league will be guided by the current USA Hockey
rule book with the exception of the fighting rule as so stated in item rule 13.
4.) A roster will consist of a maximum of 20 players.
5.) A minimum of 8 players and a goalie may be dressed for a game in an
emergency only. (i.e. Bantam teams during the High School season)
6.) All protests must be made to the League Commissioner within 24 hours by
phone and 48 hours in writing, or before the next game. Note: Judgement
calls of officials are not grounds for protest.
7.) Player eligibility dates for team rosters will be in accordance with USA
Hockey guidelines.
8.) Complete uniforms and helmets are mandatory for play. All players must
wear only USA Hockey approved helmets.
9.) No player may appear on more than one roster within the League. A player
from a team below may be carried as an alternate. Each alternate may play only five
games for the team above. If a player participates in a sixth game, he or
she will not be allowed to play for the team below. Each time an alternate
player plays he or she must sign the score sheet prior to the start of the game
otherwise the game will result in a forfeit.
10.) In case of inclement weather teams should call the rink they are
scheduled to play in. If the rink is open the game should be played.
11.) Postponement forms will be issued to each program representative. These
forms must be filled out and returned to the League office within 7 days of any
cancelled or postponed game. Forfeits and credits will be awarded only if
these forms are received prior to the aforementioned deadline.
12.) Opponents requesting postponement of scheduled games must make
arrangements with the opponent and submit a league score sheet within 30 days of
the originally scheduled games date. Game sheets for postponements in the final
month of the season must be received 7 days prior to the final regular season
game. Approved USA Hockey Officials must officiate and sign the game sheet. The
above is required in order for any makeup game to count toward league standings.
Any makeup games score sheet received after the aforementioned deadline will not
be accepted and a forfeit will be awarded. The League is not responsible for
any costs incurred as a result of a postponed and rescheduled game, unless such
a postponement is initiated by the league.
13.) Fighting or attempt to injure / major penalty will result in expulsion
for the league pending a board hearing. The board will consist of the
commissioner, referee in chief, and the chief official scorer. The program
representative, the player, and the player’s coach must also be present at the
hearing. The hearing will be held within two weeks of the incident.
14.) Teams requesting postponement with other teams due to inclement weather are
responsible for the full cost of the regularly scheduled game, unless the game
has been cancelled by the Valley League.
15.) Players, including alternates, must wear the same rostered jersey number
throughout the season.
16.) The shaking of hands among players at the conclusion of a game is not
permitted. The visiting team will leave the ice first. The home team will remain
on the bench until all players of the visiting team are off the ice. Any coach
whose players leave the bench too soon, thereby causing an altercation, will not
be permitted to return the bench as coach until he has a hearing with the board
of commissioners.
17.) Each team’s coach is responsible for the actions of his players on and
off the ice. The condition of league facilities are maintained for the confort
and convenience of all league members, abuse of these facilities will be dealt
with severely by the league commissioner. If your locker room is dirty or
damaged report it to the league commissioner and include a brief note in the
comments section of the official game sheet.
18.) The regular season standings will be computed by points: Win : 2 points,
Tie: 1 point, Loss: 0 points. Tie breakers are determined as follows: 1) Head to
Head regular season play 2) Goals differential Head to Head. 3) Overall goals
differential. Teams moving up or down after January 15th will not carry their
record, but will be given an opportunity for the same possible points with other
teams in their new division.
19.) All rosters must be on a Valley Youth Hockey League form with goalies
indicated. The commissioner reserves the right to check signatures and declare a
forfeit if any discrepancies exist.
20.) No coach will be allowed on the ice to aid an injured player until the
referee requests help.
21.) Please instruct parents to stay off the ice. Non compliance will result
in suspension of that parent’s child from the league.
22.) Trophies are awarded to the winning team or Co-champions in each
division of all leagues.
23.) Any and all complaints, written or otherwise, by directors, coaches,
parents will not be accepted unless they have been approved by the board of
directors of their program.
24.) The game is a sport, and the rule of fair play and sportsmanship are
mandatory in the Valley League. We are guiding and teaching the young leaders of
tomorrow. They will emulate our actions.
- Any coach who forgets he or she is teaching young children and behaves in a
less than gentlemanly manner either during, before or after the game will
receive a suspension from the league.
- Any parent acting in the same manner, will cause their child to be
suspended.
- Suspended coaches or players will not be allowed to participate in league
competition for a period of time as determined by the League Commissioner
25.) Any coach , manager, or trainer ejected from a game will automatically
receive a one game suspension. Repeat offenders will be suspended permanently.
26.) Running clock situations: 1) 15 assessed penalties in a game. Includes
game misconducts. Does not include misconduct penalties. 2) 6 goal margin occurs
between teams during the game. If this margin drops back below six, stop play
will resume.
27.) Any player that receives 4 penalties in a game, including misconduct
penalties, will be suspended for that game and the next scheduled league game.
28.) Teams should be ready to play 5 minutes prior to the scheduled game
time. A warm-up period of three minutes shall be allowed prior to the start of
each game. Teams not prepared to play after the warm-up period will be assessed
a minor penalty for delay of game.
29.) Modification of league fighting rule No. 11 for Midget and High School
level teams:
- Any player assessed a fighting major penalty is automatically suspended
from league play for one year from the date of the incident.
- Any team which has a second fighting major penalty is suspended from league
play for the balance of that year.
30.) Penalty times:
Mite, Squirt and Peewee – Minor (1:00), Major (3:00), Misconduct (8:00)
Bantam and High School – Minor (1:30), Major (4:00), Misconduct (8:00)
