2000-2001 Season Head Coach Interview Questions
The questions below will be asked by Board of Director's
during the upcoming interviews.
The ones marked "***" are the high priority questions that will
be asked of ALL applicants.
The others will be asked depending on age division & time constraints.
To see the process used to select coaches scroll down below the questions.
Other questions / Concerns that the Board should
address: Click here to send e-mail
***1.) What night / time do you request practice
Choice #1 ________________________ Choice #2_____________________________
2.) How much time do you spend (or plan to send) preparing for practices ?
3.) Do you think the association needs to be tied to the high school program ?
If yes, how, If no, why?
4.) Have you (or would you) make use of the coaching coordinator ? What should be his
goals / limitations ?
***5.) What is the biggest problem that you have had to deal with this
year and
how did you overcome it? If 1st time applicant - what is the biggest coaching problem?
***6.) The 2000 - 2001 tryouts will use the following scoring criteria:
I.) Tryout selection committee rating:
1 - 10 (Skating Skills) , 1 - 10 (Puck Skills), 1 - 40 (Scrimmage Play)= 60 points
Max.
II.) Current head coach evaluation: 9 (Game play), 3 (Attendance), 3
("Coachability") = 15 points Max.
Do you agree with the point assignment ? ("Game play" accounts for 65% of
the rating)
***7.) Goaltenders at the Squirt, PeeWee, and Bantam level will be given
a separate 1 hr tryout in addition to their 3 hours with the rest of their age division.
The drills and rating criteria will be established by the goalie skill clinic instructor
(Garagosian) with the PeeWee director and coaching coordinator. What issues do you have
with this approach ?
8.) What age divisions should tryout by position ? (Mites, Squirts, PeeWees, Bantams,
Midgets?)
9.) How many open slots should be the "A" teams ? Should the number be different
by division - less at the mites and squirts more at the peewee and bantams ?
10.) How many players do you want on your team ? Skaters + Goalies or Forwards /
Defenseman (This is / will be tied to the number of players in the division).
11.) Should the Squirt / PeeWee level cut back to one league ? Should we change leagues ?
What leagues ?
12.) What do you think of using our 8 sheets of practice ice in the following manner :
Bantams, PeeWees, Squirts, Mites, and Instructional mites will put 3 teams on the ice
using 5 sheets, the remaining 3 sheets will be used on a 3 week rotation? (Every 6 weeks
you would have 6 shared practices & 2 full ice(single team) practices. (This assumes
that the Thursday night PeeWee ice at Flynn will be available for 00 - 01).
13.) Would you / could you support 4:00 PM weekday practices ?
***14.) Should we stress competitiveness or recreation ? Do you see a
difference between "A" teams and "B" or "C" teams?
***15.) What two attributes do you bring to the __________ team that the
Board should weigh heavily in our coaching selection, particularly if there are other
qualified candidates ?

Here is the method to used for coaching selections
Ballot #1 for the Squirt "A" team
The coaches whose 1st choice was the Squirt "A" team are discussed
& voted on.
There are 4 possible outcomes:
a.) Jones wins b.) Smith wins c.) there is a tie and the president breaks the tie
d.) the Board can vote to "Leave Open" the coaching slot.
The first 3 outcomes are self-explanatory.
The 4th of "Leave Open" requires that the Board now discuss &
vote on the 2nd choice candidates.
Ballot #2 for the Squirt "A" team (vote on Ballot #1 was
"Leave Open")
In the case of the squirt "A" there are 4 possible outcomes:
a.) Doe wins b.) Public wins c.) there is a tie and the president breaks the tie
d.) the Board can vote to "Leave Open" the coaching slot.
Again, the first 3 outcomes are self-explanatory.
The only question to be answered is "Does Public want to be the Squirt "A"
or Mite "A" coach.
Unless someone can speak on behalf of Public, a phone call should be made.
The 4th of "Leave Open" requires that the Board now advertise for
additional coaching applications for the Squirt "A" team and begin to prepare
for tryout coverage.

Why 1st Ballot then 2nd Ballot, instead of all"
candidates at once ??
Because some coaches only choose 1 team, other choose 2, and in years past 3.
Allowing all candidates to be debated about & voted on regardless of 1st or
2nd choice
would give those with mutiple choices better odds of getting a team. It also indicates
that
picking the coaches after the teams are selected would eliminate any need
for 1st , 2nd, 3rd choices , unless it was in a different
age division.
After votes are completed, the candidates who did
not get a team are
notified 1st, the new head coach last.
